To help you understand more about braces, our team at Quality Orthodontic Care is happy to provide the definitions to the following terms:
Band – A band is a metal ring that fits snug around your back molars. Orthodontists use these bands to provide further support for the back teeth and to support headgear and bite correctors if needed. A band can also prevent the back molars from breaking, which is very helpful considering how often the back molars are used.
Bracket – A bracket is a small metal square that is glued to the front surface of your tooth. There will be a bracket for each tooth in your smile when you have braces. The bracket holds the orthodontic wire in place and it makes the tooth movements possible.
Retainer – A retainer is a removable or permanent appliance that keeps your teeth in position after your braces have moved them. A permanent retainer is typically a metal wire that is glued to the back surfaces of your teeth. A removable retainer is a small appliance that can fit over your smile. You generally wear the appliance at night while you sleep. A retainer can also be used for minimal tooth movement.
Adjustment – An adjustment is an appointment that allows your orthodontist to tighten your appliance and apply needed pressure to your smile. This will help you continue on the path toward straight and beautiful teeth.
Orthodontist – An orthodontist is a dentist that has received 2-3 additional years of schooling and training specific to orthodontics. After completing the program, they are officially certified.
Dr. John Fleming and our caring orthodontic team know that orthodontics can be tricky and confusing at times, which is why we are happy to help you know a little more about the terminology.
